2018 Women Who Light The Way

1. Betty Bower: A well-known volunteer in many community activities including Sister Cities, Women’s Symphony League, The Tyler Garden Club, UT Tyler College of Arts & Sciences advisory board, North Tyler Day Nursery, and more.

2. Lt. Carolyn Brown: The first African American woman to be hired by the Smith County Sheriff’s Office to work in the jail. She has now been there for 25 years, rising from a jailer to lieutenant over Jail Operations and was honored as Officer of the Year. She has served as a board member of the East Texas Crisis Center and is active in her church.

3. Anne Delaet: Created “Welcome Home Soldiers” which organizes crowds to gather for returning military soldiers at the Tyler Pounds Regional Airport.

4. Christina Fulsom: Founder of East Texas Human Needs Network (ETHNN) that works to improve the lives of those in poverty. She conducts the homeless count each year and the Homeless for a Night event. She created the 903HELP.com website to connect people in need to community resources. She is the former executive director of PATH.

5. Margaret Perkins: A very active volunteer for the Women’s Fund, Literacy Council and started the Promise Program in Rusk to give students a free education at Tyler Junior College. The program is now available to the entire TJC service area.

6. Sonja Watson: A retired school teacher who took over as Executive Director of the North Tyler Day Nursery, which is now housed in the old Griffin Elementary School. She is also a very active volunteer in the community.
